Remote Campsites in the Moosehead Lake Region

Fire Permit Sites

Camp Site

For those hardy souls who are looking for minimum facilities and maximum seclusion, the fire permit sites are designed with you in mind. These sites are usually remote; access is limited by walking, four wheel drive vehicle or canoe. A fire permit can be obtained at the Moosehead District Office in Greenville. Permits are issued for a specific site only. Air patrols and fire lookout towers maintain watch over the forest resources of the state, and smoke coming from a remote pond means forest fire to the rangers when no permits has been issued. Save time and money by getting a fire permit for your visit to these sites.

Maine Forest Service Campsites

Originally quite a few of these sites were the old guide sites from the turn-of-the-century sporting camps. These sites are well maintained by Forest Service personnel. Fireplaces, picnic tables and toilet facilities can be found at most of these. These sites are easily found and are marked with a green and white sign. No reservations are required and there is no fee. Fire permits are not necessary at authorized sites
