To those who are used to being surrounded by shopping malls, a maze of city streets and office buildings, even our small rural communities must seem "remote" and somewhat near the end of the earth! However, from our perspective, "remote" means miles from our small communities, accessible by dirt roads sometimes filled with potholes and designed for 4 wheel drive vehicles. "Remote" can also mean accessible by seaplane only or the "you can't get there from here" concept!

The concept of "rustic" is often misunderstood by those used to greater amenities than the North Woods allows. The imagined cute, cozy cottage with lighted fire, TV in the corner, dishwasher in the kitchen sometimes gives way to the North Woods reality of cute, cozy cottage with lighted wood stove, gas lights, dishes by hand, mice in the woodpile, outdoor plumbing and "back to the basics" living. When you ask us about lodging and dining possibilities, it is important for you to clearly indicate your expectations. Few accommodations in our region would be defined as luxurious by urban standards. However, by North Woods definition, some might qualify. We would never deliberately mislead you, but our difference in perspective might not be clearly understood.

Within the Moosehead Lake Region, you might choose to vacation or overnight at a centrally located hotel with suites and dining facilities or in a standard private motel room. At a sporting camp you might choose between housekeeping cottages or American Plan (meals included) options. Your preference might lean toward a traditional Inn with elegant decor and dining or a comfortable bed and breakfast with the added benefit of friendly Maine hospitality. If you prefer a classic remote wilderness lodge with fly-in only access, we can fulfill that dream too! Or if your circumstances demand a low budget vacation, we can recommend excellent guest houses to suit your needs.
